Overall, 2.9 million passengers travelled between Dublin and North America last year, and the figure already looks set to break well past the three million barrier this year.
A large part of the reason for Dublin becoming such a major centre for transatlantic flights is the presence there of US Customs and Immigrations pre-clearance checks.
This means passengers from Dublin can bypass those lengthy queues when they land in the US. It is something that more and more travellers from all across Europe are taking advantage of. Many are now choosing to fly first to Dublin from their ‘home’ airport, and then take a connecting flight from there.
Dublin is the only capital city airport in Europe to have such a facility. Last year, it earned another distinction by opening a new passenger lounge after US pre-clearance in Terminal 2.
