Irish travel agents have reported that bookings for long haul holidays are up significantly for 2017 – making them the top travel trend for the holiday season that’s just begun.
The latest quarterly survey issued by the ITAA (Irish Travel Agents Association) shows that 20% of ITAA member agents named long haul destinations as the top travel trend for the summer. Almost as many reported increased interest in cruise holidays, while 12% said that more and more customers have been looking for adventure experiences in 2017.
Closer to home, Spain, Portugal and the USA were once again named as Ireland’s most popular holiday destinations overall. London was way out in front in terms of short city breaks, followed by Barcelona and Rome.
Overall, the survey results also showed continued growth for the Irish travel trade. 83% of travel agents said they enjoyed an increase in turnover for the first quarter of 2017 (January -March) when compared with the same period in 2016. 75% of travel agents surveyed also experienced an increase in bookings for the first three months of 2017, with a quarter of those surveyed seeing an increase in bookings of more than 10%.
That’s all very positive news, for both travel agents and for holidaymakers themselves. Perhaps the increase in holiday bookings – and specifically, in more expensive options like long haul – is a sign that we really have come out of the recession. Long may it continue!
