Need a holiday? Tired of your work? Want to run away to somewhere exotic? Then my answer for you is Turkey! Turkey is a great location for a vacation and is perfect for people who are interested in history and culture. The biggest city in Turkey, Istanbul, is an important trading city and bridges the continents of Europe and Asia. It’s famous for architecture, trade and science. Here are our insider tips on what to see and do when you get there!
1 – Istanbul
Istanbul was the centre of world trade for the Europeans. Europe and Asia are separated by one of the busiest straits in the world, the Bosporus river. Istanbul is unique in that it is a city which is divided by two continents. There are many attractions located in Istanbul for instance the Grand Bazar, the Blue Mosque, the Hagia Sophia, the Galata Tower and the Maiden’s Tower. By the way the Maiden’s Tower is one of the top ten most photographed buildings in the world. An architecture freak, a culture fan and a party machine could be the best friends in Istanbul!
2 – Pamukkale
Pamukkale is a UNESCO World Heritage site which is located in the southwest of Turkey. Pamukkale or Hierapolis is an ancient Greek city. This area has been drawing the weary to its thermal springs since the classical times. Pamukkale’s terraces are made of travertine, a sedimentary rock: this is the reason why it’s so white and looks like snow. The water in the terraces are between 35 degrees and 100 degrees, perfect for the weary traveller.
3 – The Aegean Coast
The Aegean Coast is very popular with Irish package holiday tourists. In this area there are ancient buildings and ruins from the ancient Greeks including the Temples of Artemis, Ephesus and Aphrodisias. The beaches of Kusadasi, Bodrum and Izmir are attractions in their own right and are known for their clear and turquoise water.
4 – Topkapi Palace
The Topkapi Palace is a museum in Istanbul. In the 15th century, it served as the main residence and headquarters of the Ottoman sultans. It’s an architectural beauty for our architecture fan’s. The Construction began in 1459, ordered by Mehmed the Conqueror, six years after the conquest of Constantinople and it took 19 years to build this massive palace which is 700 thousand m2 in size.
5 – Anitkabir
Anitkabir is located in Ankara, the capital of Turkey. It’s the mausoleum from Ataturk, the father of the Turks. His official name is Mustafa Kemal Pascha but he is known as Ataturk because he made the Republic of Turkey independent in 1923. The architecture of this building is amazing. The path to the Anitkabir is made of laid stones but the crazy thing is that the stones are laid with gaps so if you want to go to the tomb you must go with your head down and this is also a respectful gesture for the Turkish people.
